SZ Blockprints

Proud Partners since 2024

In 2024, Girls in Motion partnered with Jaipur based Block printing company SZ Blockprints. The collaboration stemmed from a desire to create a uniform that would allow for an transition from school girl to sport woman when on the badminton court.

Certain quotas needed to be met such as something culturally appropriate, functional and sustainable, rather than feeding into the fast fashion industry. The uniforms were made using surplus fabric that had been accumulated over years in SZ’s stockroom.

SZ Blockprints, founded in 2016 by Sarah Zellweger, has emerged as a frontrunner in the revival of block printing, bridging tradition with contemporary appeal, as described by Vogue in 2023. From its humble beginnings as a market stall in East London's Broadway market, SZ Blockprints has grown into a global brand with retail partnerships in key markets like the USA and Japan, including J.Crew,Tuckernuck, and Ron Herman/Sazaby Group.

“To me, handmade is the highest form of luxury. The emotional connection I have to the print of block print and to every piece we produce is palpable. I am so thrilled to support Girls in Motion in the creation of the uniform sets for the girls – durable, playful, and beautiful. All parts of the energy we at SZ Blockprints hope to put forth into the world.”

A Sustainable Collaboration

The collaboration between Girls in Motion, SZ Blockprints, and KIN Fabrics is fueled by a shared belief in the unifying powers of uniforms. By empowering girls to feel part of a team, it positions them at the forefront of a movement that reevaluates the role of women in sports and society. All three organisations are committed to craftsmanship and sustainability. When Douce identified the need for uniforms she reached out to Ortensia Kruger, a designer at SZ Blockprints who suggested repurposing surplus fabric from SZ

Blockprints' production. Together, they produced 200 unique sports uniforms, allowing each girl to express her individuality while promoting a sense of collective identity.

“Indian sports culture is heavily skewed towards men’ s cricket, leaving a disparity in sports opportunities for women. Yet, stars like PV Sindhu in badminton are challenging this norm, highlighting the need to recognize women’ s prowess in sports. Our mission goes beyond physical activity; it’ s about nurturing self-esteem and fostering teamwork. By investing in the holistic development of girls, we hope to be shaping futures.”
